With the different seasons in Morzine, Autumn is the time of year when the town begins to get ready for winter.

This is the longest period of time when lifts are closed, from the end of the summer biking season in mid September it is approximately three months till the lifts begin to reopen for winter. As with spring, it is generally a quiet time in town and if there is heavy rain during Autumn it can leave people with little to do.

When does Autumn begin in Morzine?

From September the temperature begins to drop. Whilst there can still be warm, sunny days there is still a definite change in the air as the days get shorter.

At this time of year the mountains are at their most colourful. The leaves on the trees turn golden, yellow and orange. It is a great time of year to go hiking in the surrounding mountains, although hunting season begins in September so it is important to be careful!

There can be a lot of rainfall in October and November, but this also usually brings the first snows of winter. Snow usually begins falling on the higher peaks and in Avoriaz from October. A couple of warm days can quickly melt any of the snow at lower altitudes but the higher pistes will hold on to some of the snow and begin getting ready for the coming winter.

Events and activities during the Autumn in Morzine

If enough snow falls early on then some enthusiastic people will take their snowboards and skis up to Avoriaz and hike up the slopes to get some of the early snow.

There are still some events on during this time, including the St Jean dAulps Wine Fair which is always very popular.

By the end of November winter seasonaires begin arriving and town once again starts to get busy. By early December there is sometimes snowfall all the way into town and winter can begin!
