To really discover a place and be able to look around it with a real understanding a good starting point is to look into the history. Whilst this can obviously refer to the past of a place it can also mean looking at the developments going on around you that show the way the town is going and the history that is being written.

Main Projects In Les Gets

The first single seater ski lift opened in Les Gets in 1938. This was followed by the first ski lift on Mt Chery in 1954, after which the number of lifts continued to grow steadily, to the point where there are now forty eight lifts and seventy one runs. Plans are currently under consideration to link the Chavannes with Mt Chery as well as a lift from Mt Chery to Grande Terche, opening up access to a whole new ski area.
An important summer development was the opening of the golf course in 1994, which was extended in 2001.

Origins Of Les Gets

Les Gets is far older than the ski industry that has made it famous and, along with Morzine and Chatel, this means that there is far more history to be discovered in the town. The first mentions of Les Gets are in the twelfth century. Les Gets features in church records from the time. There is some debate about where the name originally came from, but it looks likely that it relates in some way to the timber industry which was important for Les Gets in its early days. Other early industries at the time included farming and cheese making. All the early industry revolved around the land. The ski industry began in Les Gets with the construction of the first lift in 1938 and has continued to grow to this day.

Main Events Les Gets

In summer a number of events revolving around cycling come to Les Gets. These include Crankworx and UCI World Cups for mountain biking. The Tour De France has also been known to pass through ton in previous years. Away from cycling there are a number of music events throughout the year, including Rock The Pistes in March and the Lounge Music Festival and Mechanical Music Festival every summer.
