Events in and around Chatel have two main aims: firstly to represent something of the history of the area and tell the story of the villages, and secondly to promote tourism in the area and to help spread the name of the town.
Mountain Bike Events
Mountain biking has continued to grow in popularity in the Portes Du Soleil, and Chatel has continued to evolve to provide riders with what they want. Perhaps the most well known of all the events in the area is the Passportes Du Soleil. This event takes place towards the end of June and marks the full opening of the Portes Du Soleil biking area. Crossing the border from France to Switzerland and back again the event involves eighty kilometres of runs, nine potential starting points and plenty to see along the way. This is a world renowned event and brings plenty of riders to town. In late July the Chatel Reboul comes to Linga. Organised by Scott bikes and Chatel it is a slopestyle competition with pro riders, demonstrations and a barbecue, with after parties in town.
For Bastille Day a lumberjack competition is held at the Vonnes Lake, where fourteen lumberjacks compete for the title, with fireworks to finish the day off and commemorate Bastille Day.
The Old Customs House
With its location on the Swiss French border, Chatel was historically a centre for smuggling. During the summer months it is possible to be taken on a guided tour of the old customs house, and there is a fun event for children where they can use clues to track down a local smuggler.
The Maxi Rires Comedy Festival
Into its tenth year, the Maxi Rires comedy festival brings world renowned comedy stars to the Alps with main shows at The Palladium and an open stage at Ziggyís Bar. There is also a special ids event. The festival takes place over a week towards the end of May.
Fetes De Fromages En Abondance
In August Abondance celebrates the cheeses that made the town famous, from the Abondance cheese that took the valleyís name to Reblochon, Swiss cheeses and Belgian beers.
At the start of October the town hosts their traditional autumn fair. The cows descend from the pastures for winter, as they have for hundreds of years before crossing the town for the annual cow competition in the early afternoon, followed by a prize giving!
